The Andhra Pradesh Opposition parties have stepped up their campaign against the chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to resign taking responsibility for the killing of eight persons in police violence in Mudigonda village in Khammam district on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Mr Reddy criticised the Opposition for instigating people through ‘false propaganda’ against his government.
While the Left parties and Telugu Desam Party met Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Monday seeking his intervention, TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu is to undertake a day-long fast on Tuesday to protest against the ‘indifference’ of the Prime Minister to the Mudigonda killings.
Dr Singh is on a day-long visit to the city on Tuesday but there is no programme to visit Mudigonda village. Dr Manmohan Singh spoke to Mr Reddy on Monday and expressed regret at the unfortunate incident. Mr Reddy updated him on the steps taken by the government to provide relief to the families of the dead. Mr Naidu meanwhile has demanded that Reddy should resign immediately. “This chief minister has lost the right to continue, ” he said.
State CPI(M) secretary B V Raghavulu said Mr Reddy had lost all right to remain in the position after innocent and peaceful protesters were fired upon. However, CPI differs with its allies saying that it was not right to target an individual and also that such targeting would distract attention from the main agenda of demanding that government land be allotted to the poor.
Meanwhile, two days after the police firing two ministers belonging to Khammam district were prevented from visiting Mudigonda village by angry activists of the Left parties. A few hundred activists surrounded the government guest house shouting slogans against the government.
