Woman Army officer hangs self
New Delhi, DHNS:

The army on Monday witnessed the 50th suicide of 2007 in which a young woman officer hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her official quarters on the outskirts of Jammu.

Captain Megha Razdan of 113 Engineering Regiment (Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan by a bed sheet early morning at her residence in Kunjawani army camp.

This is the second example of a woman army officer committing suicide in the last two years. Last June, Lt Sushmita Chakraborty shot herself in Udhampur. The 25-year-old lieutenant from Bhopal was posted in the 5071 Army Service Corps and was reportedly unhappy with her job.

Capt Razdan, 26, was married just four months ago to Captain Chaitanya Bhatwadekar from the same unit. Capt Chaitanya, a Maharashtrian, is involved with the chemical and biological warfare systems in the EME.

A court of inquiry headed by a brigadier was announced and an FIR has been lodged at the nearby police station. The body of Capt Razdan has been sent for post mortem, said an army spokesperson here. There are reports that she had some problems with her seniors.

The army spokesperson claimed that the rate of suicide in the army is lower than the national average. While the national average is 11.5 suicides per lakh of population, the army average is only 7.5, he said.
