Cool looks and new fashion are on every youngster’s mind. And this is the season for Wimbledon fashion. The girls want to look like a Sania Mirza, Maria Sharapova or the Willlams sisters, who have redefined tennis fashion to suit the sensibilities of GenY watching them.
Tennis and hi-fashion have been synonymous all along. There are rules which cannot be broken at Wimbledon, one of which is that all players must wear white outfits only. That notwithstanding, players like Billy Jean, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Gabriella Sabatini, Monica Seles, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario were among the most fashionable on-court icons of their time.
Tennis stars have spawned many style statements. And it’s not just the clothes that are copied. Girls also imitate their icon’s choice of accessories and hair styles—wrist bands, head bands, hair bands/ clips, caps, bags, shoes, watches, jewellery...
Sania is a huge style icon in India. ‘You can either agree with me or be wrong’ read a slogan on one of her figure-hugging tees. 'Well-behaved women rarely make history' read another, which she wore at Wimbledon last year, while 'I'm cute? No shit' was emblazoned across her frontage at the US Open in September. Sania has attitude and her attire matches that.
Maria Sharapova has been seen sporting a frilly dress at Wimbledon this year. It reminds you of a butterfly, or even a white swan. The dress was created with the tagline
“Pretty Traditional”, which represents its underlying beauty.
Maria has graced the covers of many magazines, the latest being the current issue of Vogue, where the 20-year-old Russian has been depicted in a classic skirt and sweater combination in a daring motorcycle shot. Her other modelling assignments have been for Italian Vogue, Teen Vogue and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, among others.
And even Steffi Graf, known for her work ethics on the women’s tour, is featured in this month’s Glamour magazine, wearing a sultry white Jean Paul Gautier dress with side slits!
Serena Williams, 23, knows the value of making a style statement. In fact, Serena, a fashion school grad, says one of the best ways to make a statement is with clothing and make-up. That's one of the reasons she signed on with Flirt! Cosmetics to help design their spring/summer 2006 collection.
From casual everyday wear to the best in designer labels and eveningwear, when it comes to women’s clothing at Wimbledon, there can be no explanation for not looking your best.
