The bodies of two persons who were washed away in the floods in Krishna river have been found. They have been identified as Simanatah Shiragavi of Siddapuravadi, Chikkodi and Bhimappa Dasar, Jalaalapur, Raibhag taluk.
Though the flood situation in Krishna river has improved, various parts of the district remained inundated, with traffic on 17 bridges stopped. As a precautionary measure, six families from Ingali village in Chikkodi taluk have been shifted to a gruel centre at the government higher primary school.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has released 1.95 lakh cusecs of water from Rajapur barrage. Due to excessive inflow of water into Narayanapur dam, the crest gates have been opened and from Wednesday, 2.46 million cusecs water is being released.
Water level in Narayanpur dam was 490.180 meters as against the optimum 492.252 meters. Water released into Almatti from Maharashtra was put at 230856 cusecs and 246958 cusecs was released from the dam.
The dam officials have cautioned that in the event of Maharashtra receiving more rain, the out flow from dam will also be increased.
In the meantime, thousands of silver oak trees in coffee plantations of Malnad region have been battered. The loss due to destruction of coffee and pepper is estimated to run into crores. Belur taluk which has 25,000 acres of Arabica coffee and 10,000 acres of Robusta coffee plantations, has suffered heavy losses due to incessant rain for past two weeks.
In BJP leader J K Kumar’s plantation, more than 600 trees are uprooted in 30 acres.
“It will take at least 10 years to set right the damage,”Mr Kumar said. He pegged the loss at Rs 30 lakh.
Belur taluk Coffee Growers Association president K R Rajashekhar, organising secretary of Karnataka Growers Federation T C Ananatah Subbaraya, BJP leader Srinivas and G T Ramesh conducted a survey of the taluk to ascertain the loss. They have appealed to the government to come to the rescue of coffee growers.
