Larsen &Toubro celebrated its founder — Henning Holck-Larsen’s 100th birthday on July 4, 2007. To reinforce late Mr Holck-Larsen’s visions, L&T has retirated its commitment to building infrastructure in the country.
Briefing reporters on Thursday, L&T Chairman & Managing Director A M Naik said, “Since we have completed 70 years of existence, we want to re-affirm our commitment. We will do roadshows and other campaigns, to reach out our message of nation building.” Mr Naik said that in the coming years the company would focus on infrastructure initiatives; setting up of power plants, ship building and modernising railways.
Hike capacities
“We are tying up with companies to build power plants. Plans are on to create capacities of about two and a half thousand megawatt per year,” he said, adding, “we want to start building ships in Indian yards rather than import them. At present we have orders for eight special ships to be built in Hazira.” Mr Naik also said,
“We are in talks with the Railway Ministry to modernise the railways. We have plans to get the Mumbai-Delhi freight corridor ready in a short time.”
Speaking about the manufacturing sector, Mr Naik commented, “Indian local manufacturing companies are at an disadvantage due to the taxes. For the economy to grow capital goods industry needs to be addressed.” Mr Naik further added that the benefits of public-private partnership should reach out to rural areas and not just 12 major cities in the country.
