Stir over violation of arrack ban
Bhatkal (Uttara Kannada dist), dhns: Sale of arrack in Shirali village of Bhatkal taluk despite the State-wide ban on arrack triggered a snap stir by women on Tuesday. Protesters alleged that arrack shops were selling arrack despite the ban saying that they would close their shops only after selling the 3,000 sachets they had procured before the ban. Police rushed to the spot on hearing that more than 50 women from Stree Shakti groups were protesting. Raids on these arrack shops did not yield any arrack, police said. But protesters alleged that arrack was whisked away before raids.
Farmer commits suicide
Sagar: A farmer committed suicide by consuming poison at Kanle-Padavagodu village in the taluk on Thursday.
Deceased Keriyappa alias Nagappa owns five acres of land. Keriyappa had borrowed Rs 40,000 from PLD bank in Sagar.  The bank had served a notice to him last week seeking repayment of loan. Paddy sown in his land was destroyed due to floods in river Varada.  Frustrated with this, Keriyappa committed suicide, sources informed.
Rs 6 lakh arrack seized
Sagar: Arrack worth Rs 6 lakh has been recovered in a raid conducted at Ikkeri village in the taluk on Thursday. Police were tipped-off about arrack stored near Koppalagadde tank near Aghoreshwara temple in the village. By the time Excise Department and Police reached the spot, many arrack sachets were washed away to the tank due to heavy rain. About 50,000 sachets worth Rs 6 lakh were recovered during the raid. Sources informed that arrack worth Rs 5 lakh was destroyed due to rain.
