Ensemble of haute couture
Perin Ilavia

Small Shop, a designer boutique tucked away in a lovely cottage at RainTree  was started by Anshu and Jason.

Graduates of NIFT, Delhi, the duo joined forces to work on designer western wear for the young and experimental urbanites.

In 1991, Jason started a designer line under the label ‘Identity’ and then under the label ‘Workshop’, while Anshu started Small Shop in Delhi in 1999. Six months ago, they came together to start Small Shop in the City.

The collection comprises of apparels in red, shades of pink, green and orange, interspersed with violets and whites. Dresses, tops and skirts in raw, crushed and shot silk with minimalistic embellishments, hand embroidery and thread work enhance the unusually designed range.

The intricate shredded patchwork is outstanding as your eye catches the unique detailing on hemlines or a sequence spray of flowers sweeping from the neck over one shoulder.

The paneled gypsy skirt in deep blue and dark pink is quite sensuous while the quilted patchwork of floral design on a jacket and skirt, which transforms into a 3-D image, looks very futuristic.

“Our collection doesn’t adhere to specific patterns. We are driven by classical styles and explore classical weaves. We create the tropical weather look in our designs that appear happy,” say the designers.

According to them, their focus is primarily on comfort oriented garments that emphasise on shapes, textile detailing with a lot of incepts, capes and strappy necklines. Soon to be launched is their range in cotton with flair and silhouettes.

Rain Tree is on Sankey Road opposite Windsor Manor.
