The Karnataka State Legislative Council, on Thursday, completed 100 years.

The Council took shape during Mysore Wodeyars’ rule in 1907 . It was then called the Representative Council. The first session meeting of the Council began at Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore in July 1907, exactly a hundred years ago.

Legislative Council Chairman Prof B K Chandrashekhar remembered the past glory of the House as the session proceedings began on Thursday.

He said, during the earlier days of the Representative Council it was a house for those who paid higher taxes. The Diwan was acting as the chairman of the council during that period. }

However, gradually it was converted into a house of  intellectuals from various fields, he said.

Higher Education Minister D H Shankaramurthy said that the State Government was planning to celebrate the centenary of the Council.

Prof Chandrashekhar announced list of panel chairpersons, who will preside over proceedings of the session in absence of chairman and deputy chairman of the council.

The panel includes N Thippanna, A M Hindasageri, Mukhyamantri Chandru and Siddu Nyamagowda.
