Former minister PGR Sindhia has appealed to the governor not to give his assent to an amendment, which limits powers of gram panchayat, brought into Panchayat Raj Act.
Speaking after inaugurating the State-level convention of panchayat raj institutions in Bangalore on Thursday, Mr Sindhia said he would also move the court against the amendment.
He alleged, “curtailing powers of gram panchayats is against the will of the Constitution, which professes decentralisation of power. Though Pakistan president Musharaff is a dictator, he has not taken any step curtailing powers of gram panchayats in his country. However, a government of Karnataka which came to power in a democratic set up is acting as dictatorial”, he said.
Former minister Dr H C Mahadev appealed to gram panchayat representatives to intensify their protest against the amendment.
More than 2,500 gram panchayat members from different parts of the State took part in the convention, organised by forum - The Concerned for Working Children.
