Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi stated that the Centre and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had to ensure that Karnataka released Cauvery water into the Mettur reservoir from K R Sagar dam, as the current water level at Mettur dam would not permit its opening.
In a statement, he has taken strong exception to the reported order of Karnataka Deputy CM Yediyurappa, stopping release of water from K R Sagar despite adequate inflow into it thanks to monsoon rains. “The reported order, if true, reflects Yediyurappa’s disregard for the rule of law and principles of federalism”, he said.
The Mettur dam is opened for kuruvai cultivation on June 12. This year, the dam is yet to be opened as the storage is not sufficient. Rains in the last few days have led to increased inflow into the reservoir from K R Sagar and Kabini, so much so that the level has touched around 78 ft against 120 ft.
