A new centralised agency will be created soon to check food adulteration and ensure hygiene in food processing and water packaging units, Health and Family Welfare Minister R Ashok revealed on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, he said the new body would be under the Health department and would coordinate and control the functions of Food and Civil Supplies department, police department and Corporations in respect of food safety and standards.
He said the body would be headed by a senior IAS officer and would have the powers and responsibility to inspect and initiate legal action against the rule violators.
