City student Karthik Shyam was awarded the Cambridge University Press Best Performer Trophy at The National Level Championships 2006-07 of MaRRS International Spelling Bee, held in Goa. Four other Bangalore students also bagged awards at the competition organised by MaRRS, a market research company, held from June 30 to July 1.
Organisers claim this is the first English Spelling Competition in Asia, conducted in India for the first time.The event supported by Goa Tourism Development Corporation saw over 80,000 students at the school level from Class I to XII participate in six different categories across the country.
Apart from winning the trophy, Karthik Shyam a Class 12 student from National Public School, Bangalore secured the first prize in the Category-VI. Siddarth Iyengar from the same school and category secured third prize. Namitha Narasimha of NAFL School, Bangalore won the first prize in Category-IV. Srishti Chandana of Vidyashilp Academy, Bangalore bagged the third prize in Category-II and Yash Chaturvedi of NAFL School in Category-I, secured third prize. Of the 450 students who qualified to the final round, 17 were from Karnataka.
Screening
The participants were screened through seven rounds in the competition including complete the sentence, jumbled words.
Pronunciation was the final round, in which participants were judged on vocabulary and spelling ability.
