If the heat-wave engulfing the entire northern belt in May had affected film collections, now it is monsoon fury ruining the film business with torrential rains lashing almost every part of the country with floods.
Yet music director-turned-actor and producer Himmesh Reshamiya’s maiden venture Aap Ka Surroor has become a runaway hit out of 14 releases during June. The youth lapped up the film as they liked its music and freshness.
Though Himmesh is a singer and composer with a distinctive style, he is not cut out to be a pop star whom two women are chasing. It is lavishly mounted and Mallika Sherawat makes her presence felt. It took a fantastic opening all over the country despite rains. Considering its low price, distributors all over will be richer with its good initial.
Released in the last week were also Apne and Awarapan. While Apne, starring Dharmendra with his two sons Sunny and Bobby for the first time, had done very well at his home state Punjab, it could be just a commission earner considering its cost and collections in other centres.
Awarapan was a total washout though it was a Emraan Hashmi is coming of age with his rivetting performance as a killer with a soul in the film. But what could he have done when the plot was simply lifeless?
The only big budget film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, coming from the Yash Raj Films stable was a terrible letdown as the film had no proper story line and dreadful performances by Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan coupled with Preeti Zinta and Bobby Deol. Even the good music score by Shankar-Ehshan- Roy could not help the film score.
Every moment of the two-hour movie is sheer boring with no characterisation for any actor. Though the film was a solo release with 265 prints with big hype and faced no rains too, the public didn’t patronise it.
There was a high expectation from Chain Kulli Ki Main Kulli among the low budget films because of Rahul Bose’s presence, but the magic did not work at the Box Office. It is indeed an apt answer to the Indian cricket team’s losing stamina and potential and it is a good children’s film.
The other releases during the month like The Train, Red Swastik, Swami, Dharm, Ghutan and MP3 were total losers at the Box Office. They lacked quality contentwise too. Yet another film that rocked Bollywood during beginning of June was Rajnikant’s film Sivaji- The Boss.
The film was released even in the Hindi heartland where it has done fantastic business. In Bombay too, it did housefull business at Chitra and Geeta, apart from regular Aurora cinema where Tamil films are regularly screened.
