Paes-Shaughnessy beaten

The Indian cupboard returned bare at yet another Grand Slam after Leander Paes and American Meghann Shaughnessy went out of the Wimbledon mixed doubles in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Paes and Shaughnessy, the eighth seeds, suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 defeat against French pair Fabrice Santo-ro and Severine Bremond.
The Indo-American pair won as many points as their opponents, 85, and hit more winners, 40 as against 35, but the French pair won the points that mattered.
Saturday’s results:
Men’s singles, semifinals: 1-Roger Federer (Sui) bt 12-Richard Gasquet (Fra) 7-5, 6-3, 6-4; 2-Rafael Nadal (Esp) bt 4-Novak Djokovic (Ser) 3-6, 6-1, 4-1 (retd).
Men’s doubles, semifinals: 1-Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (USA) bt 4-Fabrice Santoro (Fra)/Nenad Zimonjic (Ser) 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6); 10-Arnaud Clement/Michael Llodra (Fra) bt Marcelo Melo/Andre Sa (Bra) 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 6-3.
Women’s singles, final: 23-Venus Williams (USA) bt 18-Marion Bartoli (Fra) 6-4, 6-1.
Women’s doubles, semifinals: 2-Cara Black (Zim)/Liezel Huber (RSA) bt 6-Alicia Molik (Aus)/ Mara Santangelo (Ita) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1; 4-Katarina Srebotnik (Slo)/Ai Sugiyama (Jpn) bt 1-Lisa Raymond (USA)/Samantha Stosur (Aus) 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Mixed doubles, quarterfinals: 11-Daniel Nestor (Can)/Elena Likhovtseva (Rus) bt Alex Bogdanovic/Melanie South 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); 5-Jonas Bjorkman (Swe)/ Alicia Molik (Aus) bt Jordan Kerr /Kateryna Bondarenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Fabrice Santoro/Severine Bremond (Fra) bt 8-Leander Paes (Ind)/ Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; Jamie Murray (GBR)/Jelena Jankovic (Ser) bt 9-Marcin Matkowski/Cara Black 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (4-7), 7-5.
