District unit of BJP has flayed Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi’s remarks on Mahadayi project. BJP has termed Sonia’s statements as violation of election code of conduct and has demanded the Election Commission to initiate disciplinary action against her.
The proposed Mahadayi project is expected to irrigate dry tracts in Northern Karnataka and address drinking water crises in the region. Since the river flows through Karnataka and Goa, the project had resulted in a tangle between the two States. Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi in an election campaign at Goa had opposed the proposed project.
In a release, Vice President of the district unit of BJP K G Kumaraswamy has termed Sonia’s statements about the proposed project as an election gimmick. Instead of solving inter-state water disputes, Congress leaders are trying to exploit the situation for realising their political ends, he alleged.
Nearly 200 tmc ft water is discharged annually from Mahadayi river into sea of which the State is planning to use 7 tmc ft, he informed.
However, addressing an election rally in the State 3 years ago, Sonia Gandhi had assured of completing the Mahadayi project. This reflects double standards on her part. Former Chief Minister Dharam Singh, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council H K Patil have maintained conspicuous silence over Sonia’s statements, he chided.
