Letter campaign against amendment to Panchayat Raj Act
DH News Service, Chikmagalur:

The Hunger Project and Vikasana Organisation of Tarikere will organise letter campaign against the Cabinet nod for the amendment to Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act.
Addressing a press meet, the members of The Hunger Project and Vikasana Organisation of Tarikere said the decision is anti-constitution and is against the democracy.
“It is an attempt to curtail the powers of the Panchayat members,” they alleged.
They said “the powers given to the local bodies have been withdrawn one by one. The meaning of decentralisation will change if the government continues bring in changes to the Act.”
“ It is the plot of the bureaucrats and MLAs,”  they added.
They said no changes should be made to the Panchayat Raj Act.
It should be made to remain as it is. Governor should not give approval for the amendment and send it back to the Assembly for revision.
Earlier, the beneficiaries for Ashraya houses were selected at the Grama and Ward meetings. Now all the plans are being made to hand over the entire selection process powers to the MLA.
The Gram Sabha should be given the powers to select the beneficiaries for the Ashraya houses, they added.
