In innumerable cricket matches, Subhash Dixit had thrashed bowlers with impunity. But this captain of India’s under 15 and under 19 teams could not handle his frustration, which drove him to suicide.
On Saturday night, barely a week after he cleared his intermediate exams in first division, the boy leapt to his death from the ninth floor of Kanpur’s Krishna Towers, a block of shops and offices.
His body was identified only on Sunday morning by his grandfather. Family and friends claim the apathy of the government and of the state’s cricketing association had left him frustrated.
“He would say his playing was of no use, for despite a sports quota, he was unable to get a job. He was ready to do any kind of work as he had to sustain his family,” Dixit’s friend said. Dixit had captained the team in both the Asia Cup (2000) and the World Cup (2004). In 2006, another state level cricketer Manoj Misra had committed suicide in Lucknow after failing to make the cut to the Ranji Trophy team.
