The theme for this year’s No Tobacco Day being “smoke-free environment”, many of the campaigns organised by various organisation to create awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco tried to drive that particular message home, on Thursday.
At an awareness campaign organised by Rotary Bangalore West at Mahatma Gandhi Statue, Dr Jagadish of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology said deaths due to tobacco use accounted for more than 60 per cent of the total cancer deaths.
‘Pat At The Back’
Biocon Ltd tied up with a team of 10 Students Working Against Tobacco and the latter at its ‘Pat At The Back’ campaign was seen pasting stickers with anti-tobacco messages on pedestrians on MG Road.
Magician SP Nagendra Prasad organised a rally at Wilson Garden with a live band, cartoon characters and skeletons holding ‘No Smoking in Public Places’ banners. He used tricks of his trade to slam home the message.
The Consortium for Tobacco Free Karnataka, the Kidwai Memorial Institute and Community Health Cell also organised an intensive drive.
Signature campaign
The members of CFTFK put up kiosks in various parts of the City and led a signature campaign appealing to the BBMP Commissioner to implement the ban on smoking places at all restaurants under the Palike’s purview. Films with testimonies of cancer patients and a poster exhibition were also a part of the campaign.
The Karnataka Cancer Society will hold free cancer screening on Friday and Saturday and cancer drugs will be made available at subsidised rates (Contact 23448534).
