A teenager from North Bengal who survived after battling with cancer for three years, is now poised to fly to the United States to tell the world about his journey to recovery from the deadly disease. Bidurin Chakraborty is a class XII student of Boys’ High School in Siliguri, which is about 650 km from Kolkata.
He had been diagnosed with cancer three years back. But now he is completely cured after prolonged treatment, thanks to the timely financial support extended by former skipper of the Indian cricket team Sourav Ganguly and his team mates.
Bidurin has been selected for the World Oncology Summer Camp in Michigan this year. Here, he will be sharing his experience of trauma, anxiety and his battle against cancer. About 19 countries will be participating in the World Oncology Summer Camp this year and four people, including Bidurin, will represent India.
When Bidurin was diagnosed with cancer, his father Tiyas Chakraborty could not afford to pay for the expensive medical treatment.
Things looked up when West Bengal Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya requested Sourav Ganguly to provide financial support to the boy. Sourav and his team mates reportedly sold their kits in an open auction and managed to raise Rs 5 lakh for Bidurin’s medical expenses.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) organises the World Oncology Summer Camp in the US every year.
