A number of private builders have evinced interest in the construction of Gulbarga airport on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. According to deputy commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey as many as 19 reputed private builders have made a bid for the construction of three airports in the state including Gulbarga. The two other airports to be constructed are at Bijapur and Shimoga.
The state government has already decided to construct three airports at the three important cities on BOT basis. Infrastructure Development Enterprise Karnataka (IDEK) and the state goverment have jointly undertaken the Gulbarga airport project and Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) has been chosen as the consultant for selecting builders.
For Gulbarga airport Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has already acquired 567 acres of land at Srinivas Saradagi village on the eastern outskirts of the city on Sedam road about 15 km from here. In order to facilitate landing big aircrafts it has been proposed to acquire 125 acres more land and the process of acquisition has been set in motion, Pandey said.
The IDEK authorities recently undertook the inspection of the airport site here to ascertain the site ‘s utility such as availability of water, electricity and road connectivity. An official press release here said the IDEK will soon undertake Geotech and Topo survey marking the expedition of the long pending airport construction here.
