Election for the post of president will be held on July 19 and the counting of votes will be done on July 21, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday.
The notification for the election would be issued on June 16, while the last date for filing of nominations would be June 30, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami told a press conference in New Delhi.
The nomination papers would be scrutinised on July 2 and July 4 would be the last date for withdrawal of nominations, he said.
Lok Sabha Secretary General P D T Acharya has been appointed the returning officer for the election.
The commission has also decided to appoint assistant returning officers in all state capitals for making arrangements for conducting the poll and for transportation of the ballot boxes and other important documents to and from the Election Commission.
There are two assistant returning officers in Karnataka — S B Patil, additional secretary, Karnataka Legislative Assembly and P Omprakash, joint secretary, Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
MPs are expected to cast their votes at New Delhi and MLAs in the state capitals. However, in special circumstances, the MPs can vote in any of the polling stations in the state capital or Delhi or Puducherry.
Similarly, any MLA desirous of voting in New Delhi instead of voting in the relevant state capital can also do so. For this purpose, the electors have to apply in the prescribed format available with the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers so as to reach the EC at least 10 days before the date of poll.

New Delhi, dhns: Amply indicating that Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s name is yet to get the all-clear despite the best efforts of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, DMK chief M Karunanidhi late Wednesday night said after meeting her and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that “two, three” names had been discussed during the consultations.
"Two, three names were discussed in the meeting, but we cannot say which were these names. You will know within a day or two," he said. Mr Karunanidhi will meet the Left leaders on Thursday, following which the picture might get a little clearer.
