M Paramasivam of Tamil Nadu stunned top seed Abhijit Gupta of Petroleum Sports Board (PSB) in the second round of the PSNA College of Engineering 45th National ‘B’ chess championship here on Wednesday.
In an another game, women’s National ‘B’ champion Kiran Manisha Mohanty of Orissa held International master Saptharshi Roy of West Bengal.
In an irregular set-up of a Slav Defence game, Abhijit blundered on the 17th move, which resulted in the loss of a bishop to him later. Paramasivam held on to the advantage gained and won exchange to be a rook up for three pawns. Abhijit tried to march the chained pawns, which were well prevented by Paramasivam.
Abhijit was left with no other choice than to resign on the 55th move. On Tuesrday, Paramasivam drew with highly-rated third seed DP Singh of Railways.
On top
On the top board, IM Sriram Jha of Delhi let the game slip away from his hands from a superior peosition. In a Ruy Lopez game, Sudhi Kumar Sinha of Ordinance Factory went for exchange of the queens on 20th move.
But Jha, instead of taking the queen, opted to play Be3, which resulted in getting three minor pieces for the queen. Jha also enjoyed space advantage, but did not proceed well.
Endgame
Instead, Sinha handled his queen well, mopped up the pieces one by one culminating in an endgame with a queen against a rook and knight. Jha signed the peace treaty after 55 moves.
On the second board, Kiran tried to salvage a draw by three-fold repetition of moves, but Roy skillfully avoided that.
There was no further progress in positions for both and they settled for a draw.
