Borg forced out by dog bite
A severe dog bite forced Bjorn Borg to pull out of his first grass-court match in 26 years. The five-time Wimbledon champion was bitten on his right leg by a German shepherd called ‘The Wolf’ when he tried to pull the dog away from his golden retriever, Lipton, at his home in Sweden over the weekend.
Borg, who received medical treatment at a Stockholm hospital, was told not to put any weight on the leg for at least six weeks.
He had been scheduled to play 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash at the Liverpool International tournament this week. It would have been his first grass-court match since losing to John McEnroe in the 1981 Wimbledon final.
No tattoos, no big bottoms...
For women hoping to become hostesses at next year’s Olympic Games medal ceremonies, here come the criteria: no tattoos, no big bottoms, and cut down on the earrings.
Tattoos and earrings tend to look sleazy, while big bottoms could stick out too much, state media reported, quoting officials selecting candidates for medal ceremonies and other protocol activities.
Selection is currently under way to find hostesses for Olympic test events taking place later this year and early next year in the run-up to the August, 2008 Games in the Chinese capital.
Lifters help themselves
When the musclemen of China's weightlifting team moved the short distance to their new training centre in Beijing on Thursday, officials decided to dispense with a removal firm.
Instead, each weightlifter was given a handcart and ordered to carry a set of barbells to the new 2,000 square metre complex, where they will prepare for next year's Beijing Olympics. "Other teams always hire porter companies when moving," coach Wang Guoxing said. "But for us, that was needless."
While the 360kg weight of each load was not a problem for the biggest among them, the lighter lifters struggled on a sweltering Beijing day.
Striker sacked for swearing
S-League striker Kim Grant has lodged a complaint with soccer's world governing body FIFA and the Singapore FA after being sacked by his club for swearing.
The former Charlton Athletic front man was shown the door by Geylang United for indiscipline. "Grant breached the rules when he used the language at the office in front of a few other players as well as other staff," Geylang general manager Ong Yeok Phee said. "The vulgarity was targeted at the club...it was unacceptable."
