Air traffic went disarray on Thursday night as no flight could take off or land at the HAL International Airport for over two hours following the blockade of the runway by a Sri Lankan Airlines Cargo flight.
The Colombo-bound Sri Lanka Air Lines Cargo flight UL 9172, while taking off, developed technical snag in one of its engines and got struck on the flight pathway for over two hours disrupting flight movement.
Airport sources said that over 20 incoming and outgoing flights were delayed during the period with a number of them being international flights.
The AN-32 Cargo flight which developed the technical snag at around 7.30 pm was struck in the middle of the runway till around around 9.30 pm after airlines officials rectified the fault and cleared the runway for flight operations.
Airline Officials told Deccan Herald that one of the engines of the aircraft stopped functioning as the flight was steering through the runway to take off. “ There was a sudden drop in thrust as the flight was about to take off. The fault has been rectified and the flight took off at around 10.45 pm to Colombo,” said officials.
Meanwhile, chaos and confusion reigned at the airport as no flight could take off or land during the period. Anxious relatives of passengers waited in front of the arrival terminal. Vehicular traffic was also disrupted on the busy Airport Road and vehicles moved at snail’s pace near the entrance of the airport. Fl-ights hovered around the ci-ty skies during this period.
