The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has cancelled the driving licence of Nikhil G Thanvade (29), the manager of an English weekly publication.
Nikhil is facing criminal charges for killing three postal employees near the General Post Office on Raj Bhavan Road a few months ago. Five GPO employees were returning to work after dinner a month ago. Three of them - Srinath, Vincent and Shivappa - stepped on to the road when Nikhil, driving towards the Raj Bhavan from the Central Telegraph Office, ran over them and sped away. Three died on the spot, while the other two suffered grievous injuries.
Nikhil, son of a doctor, hails from Dharwad. He had obtained his driving licence from Dharwad Regional Transport Authority.
Regional Transport Officer Karim Baig said his licence has been cancelled for six months and he has to appear before the regional transport authority.
Second test
Nikhil has to pass the test once again after six months if he wants the licence back.
He said the Regional Transport Authority had the authority under the Motor Vehicle Act to cancel or suspend the driving licence of any person facing criminal charges.
