Tension prevailed for a while when the police resorted to lathi charge to control the staff of the City Municipality Corporation, who were staging a protest in Davangere on Friday.
The staff were ire over the remarks of Vishwa Muslim Parishat during a protest, demanding drinking water supply, drainage system and other facilities.
The VMP members allegedly used abusive words when the commissioner Pranalinga Shivasali who came to receive their memorandum. The leader of the Parishat Subhan Khan alleged that the commissioner has threatened him and demanded that a criminal case be booked. However, when his demand was not considered he attempted suicide. But CPI G A Jagadish, PSI Tippeswamy, Arjuman Banu intervened to pacify the leader.
But, the behaviour of the protesters angered the staff who in turn staged a protest demanding arrest of the protesters. The clash broke out between the two groups and the police had to resort to lathi charge to pacify the groups. The Parishat leader was arrested.
