Eliminate stray dogs in groups
Sir, Another boy dies as a result of dog bite in Kamala Nagar area and the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) claims that all dogs in that area have been sterilised (DH, June 9). It is really surprising that BBMP is harping on Animal Birth Control!
Sterilisation has no impact on the killer instinct of pack of dogs. Whenever any dog attacks a target, hunting instinct comes to fore making all dogs in the pack to pounce on the victim. It is immaterial whether it is a sterilised pack! It is group behaviour. Hence to avoid further dog bites and deaths groups have to be eliminated - however cruel it sounds. But let the killings be humane.
It is really unfortunate that BBMP has stopped supply of horse serum-based anti-rabies vaccines! If was free and any slum dweller could be benefited. But now the vaccine costs Rs 100 per vial and needs 5 injections. It is beyond the financial capacity of slum dwellers.

Another rubber stamp?
Sir, Though it is a welcome departure to have woman as a President of India, the selection and elimination prcess adopted by political parties looked absurd. It looked as though that as the candidate seem to be a last resort and not on merit. This is definitely not a good development. The only winner in this whole episode is Sonia Gandhi. She is already having the Prime Minister to dance to her tunes and now she will also have the President of India to dance to her tunes. If elected, Pratibha Patil will be one of the weakest Presidents India will have and her contribution as President will not be any significant

Hats off to them
Sir, as per the report “Sub-Stations to phase out dangerous transformers” by P M Raghunandan (DH, June 2) the idea of compact sub-stations designed, developed and commissioned by the instinctive and extraordinary capacity power engineers of BESCOM is a great achievement to avoid accidents on innocent and ignorant lives who, knowingly or un-knowingly start their career in the vicinity of the distribution transformer sub-station. Actually they are unware and carless to recognize the sub station’s erratic behaviour. Hats off to the fraternity of BESCOM.

Use will power
Sir, With reference to the article “Bangalore’s deadly sidewalks” in Metrolife on June 14, it is indeed a welcome gesture that the BBMP has woken up to the problems of the pedestrians. But both the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety and the BBMP Commissioner have said that they are not able to remove the footpath vendors.
So now it is only the denizens who have to take up this issue. The solution is very simple. It does not require any authoritative power but requires only will-power. An awareness must be created among the people to restrain themselves from the temptation of buying from the footpath vendors. There are many authorised retail outlets where everything is available at competitive prices.

Abuse of power
Sir, I share the editorial concern, titled “Abuse of power” (DH, June 8). The Governor’s hasty decision, declining sanction to prosecute the newly elected UP Chief Minister Mayawati, in the Taj Corridor case, almost amounts to an implied acquittal, which is a prerogative of a criminal court.
The Governor is guilty of dare-devil exhibitionism of abuse of power, and the decision virtually amounts to putting the cart before the horse.
