The intelligence agencies of Sri Lanka’s defence establishment have warned that the Tamil Tiger rebels, in the light of their recent military set backs in the East, was planning to carry out a “guerrilla type raid” in Colombo aiming “to create a bloodbath in the South”, a State-run media reported on Friday.
“According to intelligence reports, the Tiger outfit was awaiting a huge explosion using nearly 1,000 kg explosives to fully accomplish their target to send in Tiger cadres to fully destabilise the security in Colombo,” the State-run Daily News said.
“According to the plan the Tiger cadres infiltrating Colombo were remaining in lodges and various other places in Colombo suburbs until they get the nod from the Tiger leader to accomplish their pre-planned guerrilla type raid,” the newspaper said in its weekly defence column.
After receiving “confirmed reports” about the LTTE’s desperate attempts to infiltrate into Colombo, the media report said that the defence authorities have given instructions to intensify security arrangements in Colombo and its suburbs.
“Their determination to create mayhem in Colombo is still in their agenda. Though they have not become innovative in their efforts to trod on the path of democracy they have become more innovative in their terror operations,” it said.
Vital detection
It said that the detention of a lorry carrying over 1,000 kg of C4 explosive early this month has bared the LTTE’s intention to “create mayhem in Colombo”. The report said that the Security Forces have “got confirmation that the intelligence report they received a few months ago was now being unfolded in Colombo”.
“The detection of the explosive laden vehicle fully tallied with the intelligence reports received by the Security Forces about a guerrilla type raid targeting an economic nerve centre in Colombo or a VVIP,” the report said.
