"We have cleared the application of Bidar Medical College. Students can be admitted in the current academic year. We have approved 100 seats," a top MCI official told Deccan Herald.
After two rejections in two consecutive years, Karnataka government’s Bidar Medical College has finally received the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI).
“We have cleared the application of Bidar Medical College. Students can be admitted in the current academic year. We have approved 100 seats,” a top MCI official told Deccan Herald.
The college’s application was rejected twice due to inadequate infrastructure and absence of a proper college building. During last year’s MCI election, the inspectors found that there were not enough teaching faculty, resident doctors as well as paramedical and nursing staff. There wasn’t enough equipment to conduct clinical and radiological tests too.
The college building was under construction and there were no incinerator, central oxygen and nitrous oxide supply in the operation theatre. There was no central suction and ultrasound machine at the obstetrics and gynaecology department.
The Bidar officials told the MCI inspectors last year that the college building would be ready by June 2007.
The medical college has rectified many faults this year, said the MCI official. With this clearance, the State’s plan of having six new medical colleges has almost come through. Only two medical colleges in Raichur and Shimoga are yet to get the nod.
The MCI has also approved student’s admission to five private medical colleges during the 2007-08 academic year.
These are — Navodaya Medical College in Raichur (100 seats); S S Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Davangere (150 seats); S Nijalingappa Medical College and HSK Hospital and Research Centre (Bagalkote); SDM Medical College in Dharwad (100 seats) and Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Bangalore (100 seats).
The Rajarajeswari Medical College in Bangalore has also received MCI’s approval for admitting students (100 seats) in the current academic year, said the official.
