A healthy girl from HIV family faces wrath of society
Koppa, DH News Service:

In a bizzare and inhuman incident, a school has reached a stage of closing down due to the entry of a healthy girl from a HIV-affected family in Ammadi near here.
It all happened when a girl from Ammadi village got admission into a higher primary school here on May 29. But strangely, parents started seeking transfers to their children to some other schools after this. Out of the 11 students in the school, 8 students have left the school in the last 15 days.
There is one student in the I standard, two in the III standard. No students have been attending 2, 4 and 5th standard!
Even the School Development and Monitoring Committee President himself has got transfers to two of his children from the school. Now, two teachers in the school are teaching and preparing ‘bisiyoota’ for 3 students!
Though, officials of Education department, Gram Panchayat Member Sudha Mohan and seniors of the village requested the parents by visiting their homes individually, there has been no use out of it.
It is nothing but a wrong notion among the villagers that the parents of the girl admitted on May 29 are “HIV-affected”. Though, the qualified physician has given certificate that the girl is healthy, the villagers are not in a position to believe.
Confidence
Though HIV had been reportedly traced in the mother of the student during the time of her delivery, she is healthy at present and lives confidently as a daily wage earner. No symptom is visible in her as on date, it is said. However, the father of the child died after two years of her birth.
The ignorance and deep-rooted fear among the villagers has forced a school to pull down its shutters. The school has been functioning for the past 7 years.
