Ghosal wins Chennai Open
Putting up a fine performance, Saurav Ghosal defeated Wai Hang Wong of Hong Kong 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 to win the ICL-Chennai Open squash tournament, reports PTI from Chennai.
Saurav won the match in 21 minutes againt Wai Hang and dedicated his success to his coaches Cyrus Poncha and Major Maniam. The title is Saurav’s second PSA tour title.
Asian record by archer Verma
Promising Delhi lad Abhishek Verma was on target on his way to setting a continental record in the compound bow qualification round of the Asian Junior archery Championship in Chinese Taipei, reports PTI from Kolkata.
Verma shot 335 and 334 in the two 70M distance qualifiers to finish first with a cumulative score of 669 out of a possible 720 at the Taiwan Shooting range.
Verma was followed by teammate Sumit Mishra of Jharkhand with 646 while the third Indian Sonam Pintsho Lepcha of Services was fourth.
Nisha Rani Dutta of Tata Archery Academy led the field in the girls recurve round with 616 (315+301). Reshma Banerjee (589) and Pranitha (571) were in the fifth and seventh spots respectively.
Whatmore in Pak shortlist
Pakistan cricket authorities have shortlisted three former Australian players for the job of coaching the national team, a senior official said on Saturday.
The Pakistan Cricket Board is searching for a foreign coach to replace former England player Bob Woolmer who died during the World Cup in the West Indies. "We have shortlisted Dav Whatmore, Geoff Lawson and Richard Done for the coaching position," Zakir Khan, director of cricket operations on the board, said Reuters on Saturday.
Kanoute critical of FIFA
Mali striker Frederic Kanoute said a FIFA decision ordering him to skip international duty so he can play for Sevilla in the final league match of the Spanish season is an insult to African football, reports Reuters from Madrid.
“It shows a lack of respect towards me and Mali,” the 29-year-old said. “I'm upset for my country because FIFA is showing no respect for African national sides. We are not important for them.”
Kanoute arrived with his club late on Friday after being ordered to return to Spain on the eve of an important African Nations Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone.
