Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the result of the by election to the Ullal assembly constituency has clearly indicated people’s increasing faith in the party and described the Congress victory as the `voictory of secular and democtaic forces.’’
Speaking at the victory day celebrations organised by the Distrrict Congress Committee here on Sunday Kharge ridiculed the Bharatiya Janata Party for creating a false euphoria before the election. ``The BJP has no face to show to people. The party has belittled Congress and its leaders. Its defeat in Ullal has brought about a severe climbdown to BJP’’ Kharge said.
The KPCC president pointed out that the Congress party has polled three per cent more more popular votes than it had polled in the previous election.
"This clearly shows the increasing popupalrity of Congress party. The party has grown leap and bounds and its roots have spread far and wide. No body can dilute Congress" Kharge said amidst apaplause from the party workers.
Mounting a blistering attack on JD (S) Kharge said the ruling party could not retain even its deposit. Chief Minister Kumaraswamy made a village stay. Not a single trick of JD (S) worked.
Finally people reposed their unflinching faith in Congress, he added.
According to Kharge, Congress may have alost in 2004 elections for various reaons but Ullal has indicated party’s strength.
"If every one in the party worked hard we can win any election in the state" Kharge added.
Opposition leader in the assembly and former chief minister Dharam Singh said the Congress victory in Ullal has dampened the spirit of the BJP’s Vikas Yatra. The coalition government has reminded of the power of Congress.
The paty has earlier decided to felicitate the winning Congress candidate U.T.Khader at the function but the latter did not turn up.
