The Board of Approval (BOA) on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) will meet here on June 22 to consider as many as 46 proposals including the controversial multi-product SEZ proposed at Nandagudi on the outskirts of Bangalore.
Out of these 46 proposals as many as 42 are new proposals proposed to be set up in various sectors. These sectors include Information Technology, aerospace, biotechnology, food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and gems and jewellry, Yogendra Garg, Director (SEZ) in the Commerce Ministry told Deccan Herald.
Among the prominent proposals which are scheduled to come up before the BOA — the single window clearing agency for SEZs — is the proposal from the Skill Infrastructure Limited to set up a multi-product SEZ at Nandagudi spread over an area of 5000 hectares, he said.
Govt's recommendation
This proposed multi-product SEZ has already been recommended by the Karnataka government, sources said.
Incidentally, the Group of Ministers (GoM) on SEZs had at its last meeting decided that the size of SEZ in any sector should not exceed 5000 hectares.
However, in case of the proposed Nandagudi multi-product SEZ, land is not yet in the possession of the developer, the sources said.
The Nandagudi project has already run into trouble with farmers in the region making it clear that they would resist any move to set up the SEZ on their land.
Another SEZ proposal from Karnataka which will come up before the BOA for consideration, relates to that of the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
State proposals
The KIADB proposes to set up an SEZ in aerospace-related industries over an area of 200 hectares at Devanahalli near Bangalore. The KIADB proposal has already been cleared by the Karnataka government.
The BOA headed by Commerce Secretary G K Pillai is also expected to take up another SEZ proposal from Karnataka in the IT sector.
Tandon Holdings Private Limited proposes to set up an SEZ in the IT and IT Enabled Services (ITES) sector with a provision for hardware park at Koorgalli near Mysore.
The SEZ, which is proposed to be set up over an area of 12.15 hectares, has already been cleared by the Karnataka government, the sources in BOA said.
Though the Koorgalli SEZ project had earlier come up before the BOA for consideration at its meeting held on October 10 last year, no decision could be taken that time.
Navi Mumbai
Other prominent SEZ projects likely to come up before the BOA for consideration are three SEZ proposals from the Mukesh Ambani controlled Reliance Industries in Navi Mumbai in sectors like bio-technology, light engineering and pharmaceuticals.
The Special Economic Zone proposal of the Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Infocom Infrastructure Private Limited in the IT sector at Navi Mumbai will also come up before the Board for approval, the sources said.
