Renjith Maheswary pulled off an upset win in the triple jump as India powered to three gold medals in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix series at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.
Renjith, fourth at the Asian Games last year in Doha, topped with an excellent effort of 16.68 metres to finish ahead of Doha silver medallist Roman Valiyev of Kazakhstan, who could manage only 16.45 on the day.
India’s other gold medal winners were Sinimol Paulose in the women’s 1500 metres and Sunil Kumar in the men’s 3000 meters. The country also had four silver medals and five bronze medals, making it a satisfactory trip.
Asiad bronze medallist Sinimol timed 4:12.61 to win the 1500 metres while compatriot Sushma claimed the bronze.
One-two
It was an India one-two in the men’s 3000 metres with Sunil Kumar upstaging favourite Surendra Singh for the gold in a close race, coming home in 8:00.76 against the latter’s 8:00.86.
Discus thrower Vikas Gowda, who reached the venue late, still picked up the silver with an effort of 60.14 metres, coming behind Abbas Samimi of Iran (62.61).
There was a personal best for Chatholi Hamza in the men’s 1500 metres, won by Sajad Moradi of Iran in 3:39.04. Hamza clocked 3:40.19 while compatriot Sajeesh Joseph was third in 3:44.03.
In the women’s 400 metres, Karnataka girl M R Poovamma timed 55.30 seconds for the bronze medal.
