Identify the fake coins among doctors Sir, This is with reference to “Reckless prescription of steroids must stop”(DH, June 20). Doctors who are qualified to prescribe steroids or any of the modern drugs are careful about it’s side effects in any disease. But, in certain occasions, they are forced to use steroids as a measure of last resort as in Chikungunya when the paient fails to get relief from pain and inflammation with common analgesics.
But there are also a number of unqualified people who call themselves “doctors” prescribing theses medicines to patients.
The real problem is that the unqualified doctors prescribe steroids and stronger antibiotics recklessly with impunity violating even Supreme Court rulings. The authorities must wake upt to this issue and try to solve this problem as early as possible. --Chitguppi

Sir, State Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has been assuring people almost everything under the sun like loan waiver for the poor farmers inclined to commit suicide, cleaner habitation for slum dwellers and severe punishment for corrupt politicians and bureaucrats by granting more powers to Lokayukta. He has become a past master in creating illusions. --P V Maiya

Support NMHP Sir, The editorial (DH, June 20) “Awarness needed”was appropriate and timely. There is no dispute on the fact that mental health is of crucial importance to achieve something in life. Though it is difficult to find out the reasons for this illness, one thing is sure there is an alarming rise over the years. That is why the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) needs the support of the community. Inamdar Ramchandra

Remove the tainted
Sir, Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s directive to Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to provide a corruption free administration has to be taken seriously. As a step in this direction MLA’s Dayanand Narvekar and Mauvin Godinho with cases of serious criminal offences pending against them should not be inducted into the cabinet until the Courts clear them of all these charges. --Aires Rodrigues

Women as pawns Sir, It is a pity that political leaders are using women as pawns in their political games. Suddenly the UPA leaders want women to believe that the elevation of a woman – Pratibha Patil – signifies the development of women in India and as one of the UPA leaders stated it would only “reinforce women’s freedom” in post-independent India. Will a woman in Rashtrapathi Bhavan ensure that laws relating to women’s rights and gender discrimination are enforced? --Hilda Ramanathan

Decide Afzal’s fate Sir, Most people wish A P J Abdul Kalam to continue as President of India. But before his present term ends he must decide the fate of the prime accused in Parliament attack case, who has gone for mercy petition to the President. If he is waiting for some internal formalities that must come immediately. He should not leave this decision to the next incumbent. --Mahesh Kumar

Warning on junk food Sir, We have read about the evil effects of junk food, but the younger generation continue to consume the same based on advertisements . As a result they are ruining their health and there is no control over such advertisements by the concerned Ministry.
A warning on them such as “injurious to health” must and should be endorsed to enable the consumers to think over the harmful effects of junk foods. --B S Raghavendra Rao
