What is perhaps the longest road within the City limits, is fittingly named after a great actor — Padmabhushan Dr Rajkumar Road. It passes through a large part of Rajajinagar’s residential and commercial area.
At one end of the road starts what is popularly known as Rajajinagar entrance (near Sujatha Theatre) and it proceeds almost straight until it joins the Tumkur Road near Yeshwantpur. Traffic flows from both the sides on this road. On the Yeshwantpur side there is a continuous flow of traffic from Tumkur Road (National Highway 4) and West of Chord Road (D R Bendre Road).
Various junctions along the road lead to other localities— Malleswaram, Mahalakshmi Layout, Basaveshwara Nagar and Vijayanagar.
Origin of Rajajinagar
There is a commemorative pillar inside the park where the three roads meet (Tumkur Road-West of Chord Road-Dr Rajkumar Road). Four marble plaques, two each in Kannada and English give details of the origins of Rajajinagar as an industrial and residential area.
One plaque reads: This industrial suburb named Rajajinagar was inaugurated by His Highness Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Bahadur, GCS, GSCI, Maharaja of Mysore on the 3rd of July 1949 in the ninth year of his reign.
Another plaque reads: The Bangalore City Improvement Trust Board, Rajajinagar. 1. Factory area: Textiles - 140 acres, machinery - 220 acres, Chemical - 100 acres, Food - 40 acres. Housing area (4,000 sites - 500 acres). Total: 1,000 acres. Estimated cost: Rs 50,00,000.”
As the industrial suburb is located in close proximity to this road there are government organisations relating to industry on this road—Central Mechanical Organisation, Central Environmental Laboratory of the Karnataka State Pollutuion Control Board besides Quality Surveillance office of Nuclear Power Corporation, Karnataka Antibiotics and Phamaceuticals Limited, Karnataka Construction Corporation and Karnataka Rural Road Development Agency.
Further down the road, there is a series of religious institutions with a predominantly grey facade: Saccidananda - Capuchin Provincialate, Sadbhavana - Carmelite Provincialate, Indian Institute of Spirituality IIS) and Institute of Salesian Studies. The IIS is managed by the missionaries of St Francis De Sales and established in 1989. It offers these courses: Diploma in Theology and Spirituality, Masters Degree in Spiritual Theology and Doctorate in Spiritual Theology.
St Theresa's Hospital is a multispeciality hospital. Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt is another religious landmark. All along the road are several marriage halls—Cauvery Kalyana Mantap, Sri Rajarajeshwari Kalyana Mantap and Sree Sharada Kalyana Mantap.
The road’s claim to fame is that popular Kannada actor Ravichandran lives on this road. The Subramanya Nagar police Station is also located on this road.
Navrang theatre
The Navrang theatre is a popular landmark at the Harikatha Vidwan R Gururaj Naidu Circle. It screens Kannada films to cater to a largely Kannada-speaking population in the area. Diagonally opposite the theatre is the Shanishwara temple, now under renovation. Adjacent to the theatre is the freedom fighter Mahadev Mylar Park.
The entire stretch of the road is like a self-contained city. People living in the vicinity can spend their entire life without having to move anywhere. Provision and household item shops, restaurants, utility services, places of worship, hospitals, schools, colleges, theatre are all found on this road.
