Knotty girls enrage their families
DH News Service, Chandigarh:

Defying their parents, two girls from near Amritsar have entered into a “wedlock” and made it public to gain societal approval.
Even as their families are virtually baying for their blood, 21-year old Baljeet Kaur who was dressed like a man in trousers and shirt and sporting black goggles and 20-year-old Rajwinder Kaur who was dressed in bridal paraphernalia with bangles and all, told newspersons that they were a “couple” and had married in a temple some days ago.
Living in Chandigarh in order to escape the wrath of their families, who are finding it hard to accept the same-sex match, the newly-wed “couple” told this correspondent that they were planning to shift abroad.
“We hail from Jat Sikh families and we know they will never accept our match. So, we are thinking of settling abroad,” said Baljit, who said she would do everything to take care of her “wife”.  She said she had some friends in Canada and would shortly apply for visa after getting their marriage registered in Chandigarh. Rajwinder’s brother, Gurvinder Singh has filed a police complaint against Baljit, saying she had led his sister astray.
The two girls, who are distant relatives, said they had left their homes about 15 days ago and went to the famous Hindu shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu to solemnise their marriage. “An Army man played the role of my maternal uncle and helped solemnise the marriage,” Rajwinder said.
Wishing to adopt a child, the couple said they were too much in love to even contemplate reconsidering their decision. “We have been living like a man and woman for the past one year, so there is no chance of either of us opting out of this relationship,” Rajwinder said.
For both it was love at first sight when they met at a marriage function two years ago.
“We do not like boys. We girls are more faithful. Moreover, most boys in Punjab are drug addicts,” Baljit, who ran an immigration agency and a placement bureau at Batala near Amritsar before her marriage to Rajwinder, said.
Both have made a public appeal to their parents to accept their match and allow them to live together peacefully.
