Two GRP personnel were killed and two others seriously wounded when 20 armed naxalites attacked a sleeper coach of 3020 Dn Bagh Express at Baragopal railway station in Saran district late Tuesday night. The naxalites also abducted a GRP personnel before escaping with one carbine and three rifles looted from the escort party.
The cops were on duty in the general compartment of the train coming from Kathgodam.
Sonepur RPF commandant Hemant Kumar said that while one jawan was gunned down inside the bogie, the other was killed on the railway tracks.
Confirming the incident DRM of Sonepur division Pramod Kumar said that attackers went straight after the GRP jawans escorting the train.
“Their intention was to loot the arms as they made no attempts to harm the train passengers,” said the DRM.
Eyewitnesses said that heavily armed extremists attacked the compartment with gunfire while the train was stationed near Baragopal.
The GRP men challenged them and fired back. There was, however, no report of ultras suffering casualties.
DIG (Railways) RP Singh on Wednesday claimed that the attackers were criminals, and not naxalites.
However, Saran SP Sanjay Singh said police stations in and around Baragopal had been put on high alert. “Raids are being conducted to hunt down the extremists,” said the SP.
The incident took place on a day when Railway Minister Lalu Prasad was on a day’s visit to his home State.
Laptop seized
Meanwhile, the Bihar police nabbed four hardcore members of outlawed CPI (Maoists), including two women, and recovered a laptop, CDs and Rs 2 lakh in cash from them in Jamui district. IG (Headquarters) Anil Sinha said that the seized CDs showed training being imparted to the naxal recruits in the forests of Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand.
“The arrested persons are being interrogated by the special task force in Patna,” the IG added.
