A three-member team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday visited the Gurgaon suburb of the capital to conduct an inquiry into the 250 illegal female foeticides allegedly carried out by a quack there.
A team led by Malini Bhattacharya with two others —Romi Sharma, under secretary with NCW, and lawyer Ashmita Basu — visited Pataudi town of Gurgaon district in Haryana after the commission took suo motu cognisance of the matter on Tuesday.
“Taking note of the issue, the commission has decided to constitute a team to investigate the matter. The team is likely to present its report in two days before the commission,” an NCW spokesperson said.
“We are meeting local authorities, police and health officials to collect first hand information of the gruesome killings,” she added.
She said the team would be interacting with neighbours of the accused quack, A K Singh.
The National Human Rights Commission, which is investigating the matter, had also asked the chief secretary and the director general of police of Haryana to submit a report within four weeks.
A K Singh, the owner of Buala Nursing Home in Pataudi of Gurgaon district, was arrested last week after the police and health officials raided his clinic and discovered foetuses dumped in a sewage tank.
The accused confessed to have aborted more than 250 female foetuses and has lost count of the total, Ramphal Singh, the station house officer at Pataudi police station, had earlier said.
“He said he has been in this profession for 15 years and charged Rs 1,000 to 1,500 from each client. After aborting the foetuses, he used to dump the undeveloped body parts into the sewage tank,” Ramphal Singh had said.
