With litigations on the rise and cases continuing to be pending before courts, measures like evolving a compromise formula, mediation between the two parties will help reduce the burden and make alternative dispute resolution more viable, said Chief Justice of India, K G Balakrishnan.
Speaking after inauguration of the new building of Nyaya Degula and Bangalore Mediation Centre on Thursday, he said as the number of courts cannot be increased just because there are a large number of pending cases, alternate methods of mediation should be evolved. The government has realised this and set up such a centre in Bangalore, which will serve as a role model for other states. SC judge Justice Ashok Bhan said as the number of judges are not adequate, a large number of cases are pending.
S C Judge, Justice R V Raveendran, said before referring cases to the centre, judges should be more cautious. He also suggested the concept of night courts.
Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said the government has taken steps to fulfill many demands of the judiciary in the last 15 months, while Deputy Chief Minister Yediyurappa stressed the importance of compromise in resolving judicial disputes.
Karnataka HC CJ Cyriac Joseph also spoke. BBMP constructed this five-storey building in 2001 which was originally planned as a shopping complex.
