Foodgrains Exempt From Sales Tax
Bangalore, June 21

Mr T Mariappa, Finance Minister, announced in the State Assembly today that the Government did not propose to include foodgrains among articles subject to the sales tax levy.
This exemption entailed a loss of Rs 25 lakhs per annum to the State Exchequer.
Mr Mariappa who was introducing the Mysore Sales Tax Bill, 1957, here said the measure had sought to unify the Sales Tax Acts prevailing in various parts of the State.

Intensify GMF Drive: Nehru
New Delhi, June 21

Prime Minister Nehru is understood to have called upon State Governments to launch a vigorous “Grow More Food” campaign specially directed to more intensive cultivation.
He said that if irrigation facilities were not taken full advantages of because of high irrigation rate, the latter must be reduced. He has taken a serious view of instances of non-use of irrigation facilities.

Zail Almost Sure To Be Cong-I Nominee

New Delhi, June 21.
Union Home Minister Zail Singh is believed to have been chosen by the Congress (I) as its candidate for the presidential election slated for July 12. The Opposition has named Prof. Hiren Mukherjee, the veteran CPI leader, as its nominee.
The name of Mr Zail Singh, the first minority Sikh leader to be selected for the highest office, is understood to have been favoured at the hour-long meeting of the Congress (I) Parliamentary Board.
