Private carrier Jet Airways on Thursday feigned ignorance about the Bombay High Court’s directives to the Mumbai Police Commissioner to investigate the airline’s alleged connection with the underworld.
“We have so far not received any intimation from any quarter of any proceeding or order that may have been passed,’’ an official communique released here on Thursday said.
Earlier in the day, a division bench of the Bombay High Court comprising Chief Justice Swatantra Kumar and Justice S C Dharamadhikari, while acting on a public interest litigation filed by one Mohd Furqan, had passed the directives to the Mumbai Police to investigate the charges and file the report within four weeks.
Furqan in his petition through Advocate K T Thomas had alleged that the chairman of the private airline, Naresh Goyal, was in cahoots with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his trusted lieutenant Chhota Shakeel.
The petitioner also cited the reference of a letter written by the Intelligence Bureau to the Union Home Ministry on December 12, 2001, in which the agency had stated, “Our inquiries have established that Naresh Goyal and his Jet Airways have been steady recipients of large dubious investments originating from one Gulf sheikh. His close business links with sheikhs have been known for over two decades. These connections are believed to have been used repeatedly not only to get direct investment but ut also to get of lot of tainted Indian money”.
