Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday night threatened to go on indefinite fast in Delhi if the Election Commission postpones the Madurai West by-election slated for June 26. The state government has taken all measures to conduct the by-election smoothly.
“The state government wants that the by-election should go on without any criticism but if the Election Commission postpones the poll, the chief minister has decided to go on indefinite fast in Delhi,” Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam said in a statement here on Thursday night.
The by-election to Madurai West assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu is likely to be postponed by a week following allegations of irregularities during the campaigning. EC sources said that the poll, which was earlier scheduled on June 26, may now be held on July 4.
Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Naresh Gupta has been called here for discussions with the Commission’s officials on Friday.
