“We wanted our band’s music to be something to die for, so we decided to name the band after a deadly poison, Cyanide,” says Rohan Solomon, the band’s vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Cyanide was knocked into form in 2001 and since then its original line has been subject to quite a few alterations. Today, Rohan Solomon, Bharat Bindal, Srijan Mahajan and Rohan Kale are stamped as the bands components.
An intense habitual performer at school assemblies, Cyanide picked up pace post the Pepsi Storm 2002 victory at IIT Delhi, where the band beat 33 schools. Then it was just a matter of time before the musical outfit was a rage in the capital’s rock scene.
Sadly, the dusk of 2004 saw the band fragment, with its members forming two separate bands — Joint Family and Vorpal Scythe and Bassist Bharat had an undersized stint with AVR during this period. But in early 2006, the band was overhauled with Srijan Mahajan as its new recruit. With signature crunching guitar riffs and pop choruses, Cyanide bounced back on the gigging trail with a number of performances. One such performance they clearly recount is the Laundpad gig where they rocked in front of a 5000-strong audience that didn’t care less about the descending rain.
INFLUENCES: Cyanide’s miscellany of discrete influences include Porcupine tree, Pearl Jam, Dream Theater, Alice In Chains, Creed, Nickelback, Crossfade, 12 Stones, Steve Vai, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Incubus, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Story Of The Year, U2 and many more. Rohan Solomon talking about the Indian bands that have inspired them rants out a long list, “It’s all Indian bands that have paved the way for junior bands. Our favourite Indian bands would be Them Clones, Zero, Parikrama, Skinney Alley, Joint Family, Bhayanak Maut, The Superfuzz, AVR, Level 9 to name just a few.”
MUSIC SCENE IN INDIA: The band tremendously enjoys composing and playing its own songs. “We believe in promoting our music. Off late, we have been playing “all-original” sets. The only way a band can grow and gain respect is play original music. Obviously, we want people to like us for songs that we made, not on the basis of how well we cover popular bands,” says Rohan
