Sunday brunches are quite trendy now in Bengalooru. Families and groups of friends find this a nice way of spending a lazy Sunday afternoon with their loved ones, without having to watch time worrying about who’s waiting in line for the table.
At Casa del Sol, on the third floor of Devatha Plaza, Residency Road, the mood at the Sunday brunch was more of a party time. There were the quiet, small families with kids in tow stuffing themselves with the goodies and there were groups of friends enjoying a smoke as they savoured barbeque items and beer, and there were boisterous large family groups (with uncles, aunts, cousins, parents, grandparents and many little pairs of feet running around the table).
The interiors at Casa del Sol are very Mediterranean, white and blue being the dominant colours in the open air section, and a generous dash of earthy tones in the indoor seating area. Bamboo blinds cover the windows and one set of the windows is covered by colourful flags.
The indoor area has a shiny disco ball, and when asked about it, Executive Chef and our host for the brunch Vijay Bakshi, said, “The hall turns into a small dance floor on Wednesdays and Salsa floor on Thursdays.”
The aroma of the food wafted through the place as a band performed popular retro numbers. At the Sunday brunch here, guests are spoilt for choice — from activities to keep your little ones busy to the unlimited beer for those who wish to guzzle away, to the very popular BBQ and the pizza oven that you will never find empty, and the food counters which include a salad bar, bread counter (with it do-it-yourself sandwich and pasta options too), main course section and the tempting dessert counter.
Coming to the food, we were served some fresh baked thin crusted pizzas, which were made with fresh dough, that are an absolute must-try. Then followed fish, hot potato wedges, and stir fried chicken, crispy paneer in an interesting lemony mint sauce. The BBQ offers a choice of six non-veg (squids, prawns, lamb, chicken, beef and lamb chops) and eight veg options. “Very soon, we will introduce a taco bar and waffles, which are going to be a hit with patrons,” said Chef Bakshi.
Next on our plates was salads and sandwiches, which we washed down with tall glasses of mocktails. For the main course we tried som stir fried veggies and the Seafood paella (mussels, squids, prawns, fish and saffro mixed with Spanish rice). The dessert counter was a hit with young and old alike — apple strudle, honey drizzled walnut pudding, chocolate pudding, strawberry mousse were among the sinful delights one got to choose from .
In the middle of the meal, we also met a parrot card reader who gave us some predictions. We also indulged in fluffy cotton candy with childlike delight and stopped to watch the caricaturist and a potter who was teaching some children to get their hands dirty with clay and enjoy it too. This entire experience comes at a cost of Rs 499 (plus taxes) per head. The Sunday brunch is on from 12 noon to 4 pm.
