AQUATICS / Karnataka dominate day two of Sub-junior Nationals
Bhoomi leads charge

Karnataka have a total of seven gold, three silver and three bronze medals, while Maharashtra, days other dominant force have nine gold, 11 silver and seven bronze.

   Karnataka improved upon their show of the previous day as they bagged an impressive five gold medals on the second day of the 24th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championships at the Fatorda Swimming Pool on Friday. The five gold apart, they also picked up a silver and a bronze apiece.
   Maharashtra were the day’s other dominant force with four gold, six silver and five bronze medals.
   Karnataka have a total of seven gold, three silver and three bronze medals, while Maharashtra have nine gold, 11 silver and seven bronze.
   The second day saw five records being bettered. Karnataka's Bhoomi R Motwani was the most impressive of the lot on her way to the girls Group III, 200 metres individual medley title. She won in a time of two minutes, 44.35 seconds, just inside the old record of 2:44.84 set by Jyotsana of Maharashtra.  Bhoomi, who trains at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Club in Bangalore, was not in the lead in the first 100 metres.
   A good turn at the 150-metre mark after the breaststroke enabled her to break free from the pack.

Good pace
   She put up a good pace in the freestyle and was comfortably home.  Uttar Pradesh's Sachin Kumar Maurya set a new National record in the boys Group III, 200M individual medley. The old record stood at 2:36.43 (Mohit Kumar, Delhi), while Sachin timed 2:33.86.
   The third individual record came from Sagar Kumar in the boys Group IV, 200M IM. The Assam lad had set a new National record in the 50M breaststroke event on Thursday.  Records were also bettered in the boys Group IV, 4x50M freestyle and boys Group III, three metre springboard events.
   Karnataka's Prajwala S picked up her second gold of the competition by winning the Group IV 200M IM, adding to the 50M breaststroke gold of Thursday.
   The other gold medals for Karnataka came in the girls Group IV, 4x50M freestyle (Rachana VS, Ashritha NB, Medha DT, Prajwala S), boys Group III, 4x50M freestyle (Akhilesh Ram, Shaun D'Souza, Shreyas L, Prajwal KS) and the girls Group III, 4x50M freestyle (Sneha T, Meghana Sreevatsa, Bhoomi R Motwani, Prathima Kollali) relay events.

Results:  Boys: Group III:50M backstroke: Sonu Yadav (UP, 33.66 sec) 1; Yudishtir Jaisingh (Mah, 33.67) 2; Subhadeep Das (WB, 34.26) 3. 200M individual medley: Sachin Kumar Maurya (UP, 2:33.86 min) 1; Prajwal KS (Kar, 2:37.54) 2; Jishan Dhali (WB, 2:42.82) 3. NR. Old record: 2: 36.43 (Mohit Kumar, Delhi, 2003). 4x50M freestyle relay: Karnataka (2:02.09 min) 1; UP (2:02.95) 2; Maharashtra (2:04.16) 3.

Group IV: 200M individual medley: Sagar Kumar (Assam, 2:49.85 min) 1; Karan Jaisingh (Mah, 2:51.82) 2; T Sethu Manickavel (TN, 2:57.78) 3. NR. Old record: 2: 50.34 (Saurabh Sangvekar, Mah, 2004). 4x50M freestyle: Maharashtra (2:11.97 min) 1; Tamil Nadu (2:13.40) 2; Karnataka (2:17.63) 3. NR. Old record: 2:12.88 (Maharashtra, 2006).

Girls: Group III: 50M backstroke: Kavya Bhandekar (Mah, 35.09 sec) 1; S Vilassini (TN, 36.08) 2; R Sushmitha (TN, 36.92) 3. 200M individual medley: Bhoomi R Motwani (Kar, 2:44.35 min) 1; Kanchi Desai (Mah, 2:46.25) 2; Kavya Bhandekar (Mah, 2:46.60) 3. NR. Old record: 2: 44.84 (Jyotsana, Mah, 2006). 4x50M freestyle relay: Karnataka (2:05.46 min) 1; Maharashtra (2:07.84) 2; Tamil Nadu (2:08.15) 3.

Group IV: 200M individual medley: Prajwala S (Kar, 2:55.24 min) 1; Avantika Chavan (Mah, 3:00.12) 2; Pranjali Davda (Mah, 3:00.94) 3. 4x50M freestyle relay: Karnataka (2:18.84 min) 1; Maharashtra (2:23.71) 2; Delhi (2:24.10) 3.

Diving: Boys: Group II: Highboard: Rahul Kaluniya (Haryana, 323.20 points) 1; S Pandit (MP, 306.95) 2; Prem Potabatti (Mah, 301.80) 3.

Group III: 3M springboard: Abhishek Tiwari (UP, 256.40 points) 1; Ramanand Sharma (SSCB, 243.25) 2; Arka Das (WB, 231.00) 3. NR. Old record: 247.10 (Rohan Chandra, WB, 2006).

Girls: Group II: Highboard: Jagruti S Sathalkar (Mah, 249.15 points) 1; Deepti Parwar (Del, 244.80) 2; Ketaki Shinde (Mah, 197.60) 3.

Group III: 3M springboard: Swati Vidup (Mah, 230.70 points) 1; Nammi Divya Teja (Kar, 216.80) 2; Priyanka L (Kar, 178.20) 3.
