AQUATICS / Prajwala, Prathima clinch gold for State
Maharashtra rule the roost on day 3
From Vivek Phadnis, DH News Service, Margao:

It was a day when the rain ruled and the organisers just about managed to finish the day's swimming events in the 24th Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championships at the Fatorda swimming pool here on Saturday.
While the day's swimming events were completed, not one of the five scheduled diving events – the boys and girls Group II three-metre springboard, boys and girls Group III one-metre springboard and the boys Group I one-metre springboard – get off to a start at the Campal swimming pool at Panaji. The organisers are now left with a hectic schedule for the last day of the event on Sunday.
At Fatorda, with the constant rain, there was really no way the swimmers could perform to their potential. The result was that there were no National records on the day.
However, the gold medals continued to pour in for Maharashtra on the third day as they claimed a total of seven gold. In addition they also won three silver and one bronze. Karnataka clinched two gold, three silver and three bronze medals on Saturday.
Maharashtra's total medal count stands at 16 gold, 14 silver and eight bronze. Karnataka are in second place with nine gold, six silver and six bronze.
Defending champions Maharashtra were very strong in the relay events and three of the seven gold came in the boys and girls Group IV, 4x50M medley relay and the girls Group III 4x50M medley relay.
The bright spots for Karnataka in the individual events were gold medallists Prajwal K S and Pratima Kollali.
Prajwal won his second individual gold in the championship in the boys Group III, 100M butterfly event. The Basavanagudi Aquatic Club-trainee had to stave off a challenge from Uttar Pradesh's Dilip Yadav for the yellow metal. The two swam more-or-less level but Maharashtra's Ishan Kulkarni pulled ahead and finished behind Prajwal. Dilip finished third. Prajwal timed one minute, 11.72 seconds.
Pratima too had a tight race in the girls Group III, 50M freestyle event. The competition was between Pratima, TN's R Sushmitha and West Bengal's Chandrima Nandy. Fierce competition marked the race but Pratima held out to clinch her second gold of the meet in 31.35 seconds.
