More than 1,000 nurses under the banner of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) took out a rally on Saturday demanding relief to them and action against colleges that have deceived them.
The rally was taken out against the fraud committed on the nurses by several colleges, who were operating in the State without fulfilling the norms of the Indian Nursing Council (INC). After the colleges were derecognised, the students were left in the lurch.
March
The nurses marched from Anand Rao Circle towards Kumarakrupa Road to build pressure on the government to recognise colleges and punish those who played with the future of the students by not fulfilling the INC norms. They submitted a memorandum to Medical Education Minister Dr V S Acharya. But on the way, near the Kumarakrupa Road policemen blocked the road, preventing them from going further.
Memorandum
When the agitating nurses started shouting slogans against the government policies, Health Minister R Ashok arrived there and accepted the memorandum. The minister also agreed to organise their meeting with Dr Acharya on Monday.
Later, talking to Deccan Herald, SFI State chief B Rajashekharamurthy said, there were 1,066 nursing schools and colleges, which offered GNM and B.Sc in Nursing at a heavy price. Of these institutions, 432 had been derecognised by INC, yet these institutions were enrolling students, said Mr Murthy adding that nurses who studied in these institutions learnt later that they were neither eligible to practice in other states nor abroad.
He alleged that without patronage from higher authorities, no one can operate nursing colleges illegally, flouting the norms of INC.
