Better late than never. A day after a person was crushed to death by a branch that snapped off a tree, BBMP on Sunday swung into action and went on a pruning spree across the City.
As many as 80 BBMP gangmen set out on the task early in the morning and cut ‘dangerous’, diseased and dead branches of trees at about 100 places in the City. Besides, two trees that had become ‘dry’ were axed at Koramangala and Vijayanagar, BBMP Deputy Conservator of Forest Krishna Udapudi told Deccan Herald.
An RTA inspector from Koppal died and his colleague was critically injured when a branch of a tree fell on the autorickshaw they were riding on Queen’s Road on Saturday. The tree branch snapped following gusty winds.
Trees were pruned on Sampige Road at Malleshwaram, Vijayanagar club road, Rajajinagar, those near High Grounds police station, Sadashivanagar 8th cross, Vidyapeeta Circle, Cubbon Road, JP Nagar 15th and 16th crosses, RT Nagar, Banashankari II stage and other areas.

“We are going to intensify the drive from Monday and 40 more gangmen will be pressed into service. They’ll examine trees along all the 104 arterial and sub-arterial roads and prune tree branches that are unsafe and hanging precariously, Mr Udapudi said.
Due to the ongoing drive, there was no power supply in several areas. In fact, BBMP had asked the power utility to cut the supply to clip branches close to power lines.
This apart, BBMP jointly with NGOs, is taking up a survey of ‘dangerous’ trees and branches on all major roads from Monday. The survey report will be prepared in two-day’s time and action taken based on it. BBMP held a meeting with representatives of Hasiru Usiru and People for Animals in this regard, Mr Udapudi said.
