DISASTER MANAGEMENT
Meet to discuss rain havoc
DH News Service, Raichur:

Deputy Commissioner Dr Ravishankar has said that a meeting will be convened on Wednesday to discuss assessment of loss and damages occurred due to heavy rains in the past two days.

However, the heavy loss report has been sent to the government to take immediate measures. In a short period of 2-3 days 10 people in the district have lost their lives. Normal life is affected.

The district is also facing flood fear as Krishna river is full, as Maharashtra is receiving heavy rains. Usually every year district used to face flood problems in the month of August, but this year the fear is earlier. District administration is fully equipped to face the situation.

Deaths

In the recent rains many deaths including animals has occurred. Many of the lands in many villages are surrounded with water.

Farmers instead of being happy with monsoon rains , are in fact cursing the same as the seeds sowed are damaged and some of the crops are damaged. However, the government has sent a report of heavy loss the DC said.

Maski tragedy

The rain havoc in the district could have been avoided, had the district administration taken a report submitted some time ago had been taken seriously.

Maski is the worst affected in the rain fury. Following the opening of all 4 gates of Maski dam to release excess water , the canal were flooded which rushed into the town.

Maski is virtually turned into an island.  The Bidar-Srirangapatna highway is washed out.

The locals had demanded that a new bridge has to be constructed over Maski stream as the old bridge had become very weak and was crumbling.

MLA Amaregowda Bayyapura had tried time and again to get a new bridge sanctioned under the Karnataka Highway Development project.

However a team of experts had certified that the bridge is strong and can withstand for another 50 years. Now, that the bridge has collapsed, the people are questioning on what grounds the experts’ team had submitted such a report.
